Asphalt 9: Legends

Blog Post 3

Growing up with my brothers and dad loving video games we spent a lot of time playing together but my favorite kind of games to play on our playstation consoles was always anything involving cars and car racing. So I was excited to see what Asphalt 9 had to offer.

Some backstory, as a part of the Asphalt series, in July of 2018 the racing video game Asphalt 9 was released carrying a number of new features. Of these features are the “a prestigious car lineup, new control schemes, including the autopilot mode called Touch Drive, and race modes” (source).

The racing game is a single player/ online multiplayer game that supports ios, android, Nintendo Switch, and more. It was developed by “Gameloft Barcelona” and then published by “Gameloft” and is free to play but makes it’s money through in-app purchases. Asphalt 9 is compared to Asphalt 8: Airborne which had been released in 2013 in terms of  improved graphics design but still similar.

Something that was newly introduced in Asphalt 9 though was the option to touch drive.

The game actually allows three kinds of controls to race your car such as TouchDrive, Tap To Steer and Tilt To Steer. I personally found TouchDrive really underwhelming however it might be more fun in more challenging routes the further you play. But for the game being mobile I felt like TouchDrive was the best option. I found that in Tilt To Steer controlling turns wasn’t as accurate however I think it was smart of them to have these three controls for people to use what works best for them.

Other features in the game are the playing modes:

  • Career, players complete single player “chapters” focusing on a certain car series.
  • Multiplayer, competing against other online players.
  • Events, players participate in daily/ weekly competitions to beat other  times records.

Race types:

  • Classic
  • Time Attack, has a time limit
  • Hunted, players need to escape a cop chase without getting caught or crashing their car and getting “busted” or running out of time.

The Game features cars that are based on real manufactures and it’s routes on real places such as Rome, Ciro and New York which is one of it key features. As of February 2021 the game has 123, and to obtain the cars players need to obtain their blueprints. Players then have the option of changing the color of their car between a few colors, but once you collect at least a star known as “Star up” you’ll have a wide rage of options to customize your car. Additionally the game classifies the classes of the cars through A, B, C, D with the later being the lowest performer.
