I am a Professor in the Department of Political Science and a Faculty Fellow and Associate Director at the Institute for Policy Research. My primary areas of research and teaching include Congress and state legislatures, public opinion, bipartisanship and compromise, partisan conflict and polarization, primary elections, political violence, and public policy. I received my Ph.D. from Stanford University in 2009.
My research explores a range of questions surrounding partisan conflict and the difficulty of reaching bipartisan agreement and legislative compromises in American politics. I am also working on a series of projects about the rise of threats and violence against elected officials. I am the author of two books – Is Bipartisanship Dead? (2015) and Rejecting Compromise (2020, with Sarah E. Anderson and Daniel M. Butler) – as well as numerous journal articles and book chapters.
