Description
This virtual program introduces judges to how artificial intelligence (AI) is and could be used in judicial systems consistent with the values and goals of the law to increase access to justice and improve the rule of law.
Topics covered include:
- What is artificial intelligence?
- Benefits and risks of AI for legal tasks.
- Lawyer and self-represented litigant uses of AI.
- Uses of AI by judges, clerks, court staff, and court systems.
- AI for online dispute resolution (ODR) and alternative dispute resolution (ADR).
- AI Bias, confidentiality, security and other professional responsibility and ethical considerations.
This program is open to all judges, from all countries and jurisdictions.
Registration is required to receive a Zoom link. Space is limited.

This Northwestern Law and Technology Initiative program was organized by Chief Judge Michael Chmiel, Illinois McHenry County, and Daniel W. Linna Jr., Senior Lecturer and Director of Law and Technology Initiatives at Northwestern University. Chief Judge Chmiel and Linna have co-taught a course for judges on AI, “Evolving Technological Issues: Impact of Artificial Intelligence,” at EdCon, the Illinois Judicial Education Conference. This virtual program is in part based on that course.
