Teach from Classroom

Overview

Overview

Kellogg classrooms have been configured to create an immersive synchronous experience for in-person and remote students. This page contains information (+ classroom pictures) on the technical setups of these rooms and a link to sign up for technical orientations with KIS.

Experiences, best practices and faculty testimonials are detailed on the Teaching Support website and in the Digital Innovation playbook.

Book Time with KIS >

Classrooms at Kellogg are setup with the following equipment:
  • High definition camera (your video feed) in the back of the room
  • Large display to see your remote students (Zoom gallery view) in the back of the room (tiered rooms only)
  • Room laptop to use as your teaching computer (or bring your own), and display gallery view on the right projector
  • Room computer controlling the audio, video, speakers and content being shared on the left projector

KIS partners with the Kellogg Teaching Support team help ensure you are setup for success in the classroom. Please view detailed information on the Teaching Support Hybrid Teaching website

Here are the following services we encourage you to take advantage of, if you are teaching for the first time in the hybrid format or would like a refresher.

Before the first day of class

  1. Sign up for a 1:1 session with KIS to review Zoom basics and review your home technology setup
  2. Sign up for a Virtual Tour of the classroom
  3. Sign up for an in-class technology orientation
  4. Sign up for a dry run (email teachingsupport@kellogg.northwestern.edu) with your Virtual Course Moderator (VCM)

First day of class

KIS wants to help make sure that technology is the least of the things to worry about on your first day of teaching.  KIS comes into your classroom on your first day before class start time (and rest of the week until you feel comfortable) to ensure:

  • Your teaching content is displaying properly
  • You can see your remote students in Zoom gallery view in front of you and is projecting correctly in the classroom
  • You can hear your remote students and they can hear you
  • Answer any questions you have

During class

  • Any issues, call 7-2200 (Hub) or 3-8385 (Wieboldt)
  • Ask your VCM to contact KIS

Tiered Classroom Setup

Faculty view – see gallery view on confidence monitor & active speaker on the large display in back of room. If your class does not have remote students, you will see your slides on the confidence monitor and the display in the back will be off.

Room PC also shows gallery view of remote students and the KIS provided laptop displays shared content. If your class does not have remote students, you may use the room PC to project your slides or connect your own laptop via the HDMI cable located inside the cable tray (above the keyboard).

In room student view – shared content on one screen and gallery view on the other screen. If your class does not have remote students, shared content will be visible on both screens.

The remote student view – faculty video feed as well as a classroom facing video feed.
