COMPARISON OF THE TWO ELEVATION MAPS (SEE ABOVE): the first map, which uses the hill effect, appears more useful in finding drainages, where they may be water, rivers, or flooding. It also looks more visually similar to an aerial photograph of the landscape. The second map is not as intuitive for such purposes– at first glance the lightest portions look like peaks or ridge lines, but the legend shows that those are actually drainage lines (low elevation areas) and valleys. I personally prefer the first map (hill effect).
