Megan recently graduated from Loyola and is our clinical research coordinator with an eye on applying for medical school in the near future.

James Du

James received a 2021William H. Pearce, MD, Vascular Surgery Student Research Award and has continued to work in the lab while he completes his undergraduate degree. He is our “Mouse Master.” When he’s not at work, he’s interested in sports and fitness.

Carolyn just finished her first year at FSM and joins us for the summer of 2023. She is doing clinical research and QI.

Sarbjeet Niraula

Sarbjeet Niraula

Sarbjeet hails from Nepal. He recently obtained his PhD in Quantitative Biology from University of Texas at Arlington and braved frigid Chicago temperatures to join our lab. First order of business: get a warm hat and gloves!

Liqun is lab manager and a superb mouse surgeon. She is also an expert in traditional Chinese medicine and art.

Past members

Postdoctoral fellows:

  1. Cori Cason. Cori was the first postdoctoral fellow in the lab (2015-2017). She was funded by the Vascular Surgery Scientist Training Program (NIH T32). She completed general surgery residency at Northwestern University in 2019 and is now practicing at Kaiser Permanente in sunny California.
  2. Michael Nooromid. Michael was a resident in the vascular surgery integrated residency at Northwestern University. He was funded by the Vascular Surgery Scientist Training Program (2016-2018). During his stint in the lab, he also became a father and obtained a Medical Educator Certificate from The Feinberg Academy of Medical Educators. He is now Assistant Professor of Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University.
  3. Edmund Chen. Ed was funded by the Vascular Surgery Scientist Training Program (2017-2019). He received a VRIC Trainee Award from the SVS Foundation in 2019. He also obtained an HSOR certificate from the Center for Education in Health Sciences at FSM.  He finished general surgery residency at Northwestern University, followed by fellowship at Duke. He is now in private practice in Texas.
  4. Vivek Pamulapati. Vivek was funded by the Vascular Surgery Scientist Training Program (2019-2021). In addition to lab work, he also obtained a Master of Science in HSOR. He is completing general surgery residency at Northwestern University and will do a fellowship in acute care surgery and critical are at University of NV at Las Vegas.
  5. Tracy Smith. Tracy moved from Canada during the pandemic to be with us from 2020-2021. During her fellowship period, she became a new mom and obtained an AHA Postdoctoral Fellowship. 
  6. Jon Jung.  Jon received his MBChB from University of Glasgow and joined us as a postdoctoral fellow from 2021-2023. He is now a general surgery resident at UPenn.

Students:

  1. Rohan Kulkarni. Rohan worked with us while he was a medical student at University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford. He obtained a Student Scholarship in Cardiovascular Surgery from the American Heart Association in 2016. He is now in the vascular surgery integrated residency at UPMC.
  2. Kelly Wun. Kelly is a medical student at Northwestern University who worked with us for a year (2017-2018). He obtained both a Lanterman Vascular Surgery Student Research Award and a Student Research Fellowship from the Society for Vascular Surgery in 2017. He is now an orthopedic surgery resident at Northwestern.
  3. Owen Eskandari. Owen was our summer student during and after high school. He received a Lanterman Vascular Surgery Student Award in 2017 and came back in summer 2018. Ask him where to get the best donuts in Chicago. Has graduated from Dartmouth and is now getting his PhD in Physics at University of WI at Madison.
  4. Katie Shapiro. Katie spent a year with us after college in 2018-2019. She received a Lanterman Vascular Surgery Student Award in 2018. She graduated from medical school at UIC in 2023 and is now a resident in Internal Medicine at Loyola.
  5. Jason Linh Ngo Khanh. Jason is a medical student at Northwestern University who spent a year with us (2018-2019). He obtained a Lanterman Vascular Surgery Student Research Award, a Carolyn L. Kuckein Student Research Fellowship from AOA, an SVS Foundation Student Research Fellowship, and a Medical Student Preceptorship from the Rheumatology Research Foundation. He is now in the vascular integrated residency at Houston Methodist.
  6. Falen Demsas. Falen is a medical student at  Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth who received a Lanterman Vascular Surgery Student Award in 2019. She gave us a super tasty crash course in food from her native Eritrea. She is now in the vascular integrated residency at Mass General Hospital.
  7. JR Guitart. JR is a medical student at Northwestern University who received a William H. Pearce, MD Vascular Surgery Student Award in 2019. When he is not geeking out in the lab, he is working on model airplanes, training for a triathlon, and dreaming of being in the OR. We would miss him, but we still talk to him a lot.
  8. Maeve Eskandari. Maeve worked with us for 2 summers (2019 and 2020) and received a Lanterman Vascular Surgery Student Award. She is smart as a whip and quick as a flash. She’s now an undergrad at Hamilton College. 
  9. Nina Byskosh. Nina is an FSM student who worked with us during her second year of medical school to study PAD patient knowledge, for which she received a Lanterman Vascular Surgery Student Award and an SVS Foundation Student Research Fellowship. 
  10. Erik Wun. Erik is an FSM student who worked with us in the summer of 2021 as a Lanterman Vascular Surgery Student Award recipient. 
  11. Katia Valdez. Katia is an FSM student who received a Lanterman Vascular Surgery Student Award to work with us on a clinical research project in the summer of 2022.
  12. Spencer Stirewalt. Spencer graduated from University of IL at Urbana-Champaign and was our first clinical research coordinator from 2021-2023.
  13. Imadh Khan. Imadh is a medical student at Southern Illinois University who spent a summer with us as a Lanterman Vascular Surgery Student Award recipient.
