Kan Collaboratory

for Child Health

Our Mission

Our mission is rooted in collaboration, which is reflected in our name: Collaboratory. Our principal investigator, research staff, and trainees continually collaborate with children and their families to explore key research questions.

The Kan Collaboratory is a pediatric research lab that aims to inform the design of health policies and programs that optimize health care access and quality of care for children with chronic diseases, especially children with asthma. Our research work includes a central focus on understanding how to be equitable for all communities when developing health system interventions.

Our current research examines the use of digital health technology in supporting Chicago families with children with asthma and how to re-design healthcare systems to adapt to technology-enhanced healthcare services.

Other lab work and previous publications have examined the impact of health policies (e.g., the Affordable Care Act, Medicaid, managed care arrangements) on pediatric health outcomes and access.

Kristin Kan, MD, MPH, MSc

The Kan Collaboratory’s principal investigator, Dr. Kristin Kan, is a primary care pediatrician and health services researcher. As a physician-investigator, her relationships with families and partnerships with communities, motivate her to improve our scientific understanding of health services delivery for children with special health care needs (CSHCN) and to build cross-sectoral solutions to support children and their families.

Research

Currently, both the Technology-Enhanced Asthma Care in Children at Clinic and Home (TEACCCH) and the Pediatric Asthma Disparity Reduction Education (PADRE) studies focus on improving pediatric asthma management. The TEACCCH study investigates implementing digital health tools in outpatient asthma care with the use of a digital app and sensor to track medication use and investigating what redesigns are needed at the health system level. The PADRE study evaluates the integration of a picture-based asthma action plan into the electronic health record system and adoption by health providers.

Publications

Our previous publications have served as a foundation for the current TEACCCH and PADRE studies. Other publications have investigated health disparities and health policies, in addition to articles on asthma management and children with special health care needs.
