President | Saya Dennis (デニスサヤ)

Saya is a PhD student in Dr. Yuan Luo’s Lab in the Driskill Graduate Program of Life Sciences. Born and raised in Kanazawa, Ishikawa in Japan, she completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Tokyo. Her thesis focuses on the applications of machine learning in breast cancer, and she is broadly interested in developing efficient and reproducible ML/DL tools that allow scientific and technological innovation. In her free time, she loves to sit outside and read historical fiction.

Treasurer | Jack Diloknawarit (ジャック)

Jack is a Materials Science PhD student working with Prof. Teri Odom on anisotropic gold nanoparticles for cancer cell studies. He was born and raised in Thailand but found his second home in Tokyo where he obtained his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Tokyo. Jack likes snowboarding, listening to Japanese pop/punk/rock, tasting local beers, and learning different cultures especially from food.

Event Chair | An Kitamura (北村杏)

An is a chemistry Ph.D. student in the Malapit lab. Originally from Japan, she moved to Minnesota to attend Carleton College for her undergraduate degree. At Northwestern, she is currently working on developing organic-based flow batteries. She is excited to be a part of JGSA and to foster a welcoming community 🙂

Event Chair | Charlie Guan (関弘毅)

Charlie is a second year PhD student in Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences. He was born in Kobe and lived there for nine years before moving to Washington, D.C. He did his Bachelors in Applied Math & Statistics and Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering from Johns Hopkins University. His favorite food is ramen and worked as a line cook at a ramen restaurant in college. In his free time, he enjoys Olympic weightlifting.

Event Chair | Kyle Rocha

Kyle is a PhD student in the Physics and Astronomy Department working with Prof. Vicky Kalogera studying the physics of binary stellar evolution with a focus on X-ray binaries and applications of machine learning in astronomy. He was born and raised in Southern California and completed his undergraduate at UC Santa Cruz. Kyle is Japanese American (Hapa and multiracial) and is excited to build community in JGSA. In his free time he enjoys being active outdoors (running, hikes, weightlifting) and exploring Chicago through food and drink!

Web & Social Media Chair | Vishu Gupta (ビィシュウ)

Vishu is a PhD student in Computer Engineering. He was born in India but moved to Japan after a year and lived there for more than 13 years in different places. He is currently working on the applications of machine learning and deep learning in materials science, and his work focuses on improving the performance of the model for scarce and noisy datasets. He likes scuba diving, flying airplanes, reading manga, watching anime, listening to J-pop, and playing PC games.

Faculty Advisor | Xing Fan

Xing is a Research Assistant Professor at the Center for Fundamental Physics, Department of Physics and Astronomy. He was raised in Tokyo and got his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Physics at the University of Tokyo. His research focus is testing the fundamental physics with table-top precision experiments. In his free time, he enjoys swimming and powerlifting.
