This is a discussion group for anyone interested in talking about integrating spirituality/religion into the counseling process in an ethical manner. The group generally meets every three weeks on Mondays from 12:00 – 1:00 Central Time. During the calendar year 2022, we discussed the book Integrating Spirituality and Religion into Counseling: A Guide to Competent Practice (Cashwell & Young, 2020). In the calendar year 2023, we plan to discuss Spirit in Session: Working with your Clients’ Spirituality (and your Own) in Psychotherapy (Jones, 2019). Generally, we discuss one chapter each time we meet. From time to time, we have guest facilitators (including chapter and book authors!).
Participants are encouraged, but not at all required, to read the chapter before the meeting. However, this is a ‘no guilt’ zone, and all are welcome, regardless of owning the text or having read the chapter. We have rich discussions based on student and faculty clinical experiences and questions around the ethical integration of spirituality and religion in counseling. In 2023, we hope to infuse some ‘special topics’ into the rotation, perhaps ‘between’ chapters of the Jones (2019) text. Such topics include: Working with Spiritual/Religious Abuse, LGBTQ+ and Spirituality, and any other topics that might be requested from the group.
None of our discussions are recorded. For the remainder of 2022, we have scheduled meetings on 10/24/22, 11/14/22, and 12/5/22 (12-1 CT). We will start again with our 3-week rotation beginning Monday, 1/2/23, for the Winter term. All meetings are held in Dr. ANC’s Zoom room (https://zoom.us/j/8230546795), and all are welcome. For further information, please contact Dr. ANC, Jazmin, or Julia.
