Mark Mangini is an Academy Award-winning sound designer who has been credited in over 140 films.
Mangini’s work ranges from animated classics like Aladdin and The Lion King to dramedies like 500 Days of Summer. He is also well known for his work in the science fiction genre with hits like The Fifth Element and Blade Runner 2049 under his belt. In 2016, Mangini’s collaboration with David White for Mad Max: Fury Road earned him an Oscar for Best Sound Editing.
Mangini is an experienced veteran in the world of sound design. In his extensive body of work, he has always preferred recording sounds over repurposing tracks from existing sound libraries. For Mad Max: Fury Road, he recorded 50,000 people at a rugby stadium who were directed to shout “Immortan Joe.”
Magini’s passion for great sound design is prominent in his work. With Blade Runner 2049, he was tasked with bringing a new yet familiar world back to life. Approximately 2500-2600 unique elements were recorded, ranging from underwater sounds to electronic sounds produced by drones and drills. Since a good chunk of the movie involves rain, Mangini felt the need to create a new library of rain recordings. Nature worked in his favor as the “once-in-a-millennia” rain poured over LA.
Fun Fact: Magini was responsible for recording and editing the latest (5th version) of the MGM lion track.
