MIT 398: African Youth Media

This course gave me the chance to learn more about media consumption patterns as well as popular culture in the continent of Africa. Africa has a diverse set of cultures across the continent, and the media landscape is different from one area to another. Through different case studies, we were able to able to explore the media habits of several countries including but not limited to Zimbabwe, Kenya, Morocco, and Nigeria. The media culture is not only different from country to country, but it also differs from generation to generation. The older generation consumes very different types of media compared to the younger audience which is more into the digital world. With social media for instance, there are more younger audience users of Instagram and Snapchat compared to the older generation. One shared pattern for most parts of the continent is the production and consumption of Afrobeat. Currently, Afrobeat is one of the most popular music genres which is being produced in different languages globally.
