Understanding the mechanics of the electroadhesion

The mechanics of the electroadhesion has long been a subject of interest to scientists. Despite being studied for a long time and numerous theories, we cannot accurately predict the force capacity or the fracture mechanism of the electroadhesive devices.

Here, we investigate this mechanism through the deformation analysis and develop analytical models to predict the behavior of these devices.

Electroadhesion: simple yet complex

What we do to understand the electroadhesion:

  • We look closely at the interface of electroadhesive devices using high-resolution imaging setup

Strain imaging setup

Pulling test on EA clutch

  • We measure the spatiotemporal information of strain and displacement to reveal the adhesion mechanism

We specifically focus on:

    • Strain distribution
    • Force capacity
    • Fracture modes
  • We investigate the effect of design parameters and material properties on the adhesion force
    • In-plane dimensions
    • Multilayered designs
    • Material composition
