About GlobeMed at Northwestern

Who We Are

In 2006, a group of Northwestern University undergraduates founded GlobeMed to engage students in global health in a way that makes a lasting impact. They were frustrated by the limited, short-term options available to them – studying abroad for a few months, medical mission trips, and donations. Since its founding, GlobeMed has expanded more than 1,000 students across 36 university-based chapters across the US. Using the GlobeMed model to sustain one-to-one, long-term partnerships with grassroots organizations in communities across Africa, Asia, and the Americas, we are building a global network of human connection and impact.

Through three different routes, outlined below, GlobeMed at Northwestern has striven to promote sustainable, grassroots partnerships and public health education at home and abroad.

  1. First, our chapter is partnered with the Adonai Child Development Centre in Namugoga, Uganda. The Adonai Centre provides education, healthcare, and a home for orphaned and vulnerable children, while serving as a central driver for its community. Our GlobeMed chapter has quarterly fundraising campaigns to generate resources to fund projects for the Adonai Centre, such as the Safe Water Project and Give Her a Chance Orphanage.
  2. Second, we, at GlobeMed, educate ourselves and engage in dialogue though lessons at our weekly chapter meetings. We have small group discussions about public health issues around the world and potential solutions and their implications. Our chapter also puts on advocacy events that are open to everyone on campus ranging from expert panels to collaborations with other public-health related organizations on campus.
  3. Finally, every summer three to five members of our chapter have the opportunity to travel to the Adonai Centre for the GROW (Grassroots On-Site Work) internship. These interns live at the Adonai Centre and work with staff on capacity building projects, conduct research, write grants to fund the Centre, and, most importantly, collaborate and grow our partnership.

We hope to train the next generation of global health leaders and make a positive impact on our communities, in Evanston and Uganda!
