Food in France and Portugal – Group 12

Escargots in Paris, France
Homemade bacalhau in Lisbon, Portugal

Our group wanted to highlight the importance and role of food across different cultures.

In Paris, Chiara ate “escargots” or snails cooked in butter and garlic. The dish is a popular appetizer in France, but many American palates dislike the thought of eating snails. In Lisbon, Natalia’s host family has prepared various dishes with “bacalhau” or codfish, which is a quintessential ingredient in Portuguese cuisine, both in homes and in restaurants.

These photos reminded us of the different food customs that are found all over the world. Part of the privilege of studying abroad is getting to immerse ourselves in new cultures and cuisines. In France, a tourist might be turned off by the thought of eating a snail. In Portugal, tourists may not be exposed to home-cooked meals that reflect lesser-known aspects of their cuisine. During our time in Europe, we hope to bridge these culinary divides.
