Traveling around Europe, there are some cities that don’t just impress—they stay with you. Places like Lisbon, and Madrid are more than beautiful destinations; they’re full of life, layered histories, and unforgettable spaces. Whether it’s the vibrant viewpoints in Lisbon, or the eclectic architecture of Madrid, each city has its own heartbeat. We wanted to go beyond simply seeing the sights and find the essence of these cities—how their buildings, gathering places, and landscapes reflect their unique characters. Here’s a little of what we discovered along the way.
Lisbon: The Miradouros and the City’s Soul
In Lisbon, the hillsides are sprinkled with miradouros, or viewpoints, where people come together to take in the sweeping views. My City and Architecture class opened my eyes to how much these spots mean to Lisbon; they’re not just places for beautiful photos but pieces of Lisbon’s spirit. Every miradouro has its own vibe, with locals and travelers chatting, musicians playing, and the city’s rooftops and the Tagus River stretching out below. Being here at sunset feels like watching the city breathe. There’s something special about Lisbon’s gathering spots—they make you feel connected, like you’re part of the city’s story.
Madrid: Architecture with Heart
Madrid is like an open-air museum, with every neighborhood telling a different part of its story. Thanks to my Spanish Art and Architecture class, I’m seeing these buildings as more than just beautiful facades. Each one, from the grandiosity of the Royal Palace to the edgy architecture along Gran Vía, reveals the city’s layered past and vibrant present. Madrid’s architectural styles—Gothic, Baroque, modernist—all live side by side, and as you wander through places like La Latina and Malasaña, you can feel how the city’s spirit embraces both old and new. Being here, it’s clear that Madrid’s character isn’t just in its buildings but in the warmth and energy of the people who fill these spaces.
