As part of Weinberg College’s Convocation ceremony each year, departments and programs choose a student marshal to carry their banner, leading the procession of new graduates. Global Health Studies faculty chooses a particularly outstanding student for this honor.
This year’s marshal is Cecilia Paz.
Cecilia is a graduating senior from Los Angeles, California studying Sociology and Global Health. During her time on campus, Cecilia served as a Residential Assistant and helped start one of Northwestern’s modern Latin dance groups, Dale Duro Latin Dance Company. In her Global Health Studies coursework, Cecilia learned about the extensive role the social determinants of health play in the health of people and communities in and outside of the US. She was able to develop that framework within her research on the health of Indigenous communities in the U.S. and through her experience studying abroad in the former Yugoslavia. After graduation, Cecilia will be working for a non-profit in Chicago, where her focus will be nutrition and health education. In the future, she plans to pursue a Master’s degree in Public Health in order to continue to serve underprivileged communities.
