1. Identify your needs for a site
Before building a site, consider the main function of your site. Who is your audience, and what information are you trying to convey. Keep in mind that Northwestern Sites is a managed WordPress environment. WordPress is a powerful content management system, and there is a lot you can do, but in this managed environment, there are some limitations.
2. Check the documentation
It is best that you familiarize yourself with the kinds of things that are possible on Northwestern Sites. A quick glance through the documentation will give you an idea about the types of things you may use your website for.
3. Select a site template
Northwestern Sites provides a few pre-constructed site templates. These templates are constructed with temporary text and images. This is a good option for those who are new to WordPress. Starting from a template requires that you simply update the images and text to fit your needs.

4. Select a Theme
Once you have created a site, you may want to select a different theme. A theme determines the look and feel of your site, as well as it’s visual organization. 5. Customize with plugins and other customizations
Plugins provide your site with specialized functionality. For example, should you wish to include a calendar, you would need to activate an appropriate calendar plugin. Plugins allow you to greatly increase the functionality of your site. The Intro to Plugins page can help you learn about how plugins can be used within your site.
6. Start using your site
And that’s it! You’re ready to start using your site.
