Introduction
Our design, the Geckband, provides an improved theraband design by implementing a setae-like surface on the band to serve as a connecting and disconnecting mechanism; this design decreases time spent preparing the band for use and enables the tension to be set consistently. Specifically, our design addresses several of the client’s requirements: comfort, versatility, durability, and speed. The dry adhesion used in the design allows for a significant decrease in time to attach, adjust, and detach the band compared to a traditional knot.
Materials
The following table lists all the materials needed to create the Geckband.
Table 1: Materials Used for Construction
Quantity | Description | Specifications | Price |
2 | Gecko Grip | Setex: high strength dry adhesive microfiber | $28.12 |
1 | Duct Tape | Premium silver roll. 2 inch by 60 yards | $5.99 |
The following tools are needed to construct the GeckBand:
- Scissors
- Sewing needles and thread
- Measuring tape/ruler
Theory of Operation
The GeckBand works by utilizing the strong bond between two setae surfaces. Therefore, the user must form a loop in the band by connecting two strips of setae. In our design, the duct tape serves as a binding element that allows for the setex sheet to connect to the band. To ensure a secure connection, the tape is sewn to the band at a set interval. The setae strips are then stuck onto the tape, and the GeckBand is ready for use.
Directions
- Sew all sides of a 4/3” by 4” strip of duct tape to each end of the therapy band.
- On the other end and side of the band, sew all sides of 4, 4/3” by 4” strips of tape to the band. Keep a 4” interval between strips of tape.
- Using scissors, divide each of the 4” by 4” setex grip tape evenly into 3 pieces so that each piece is 4/3” by 4”
- For each piece of duct tape sewn to the band, take a strip of setex tape and press the non-setae side firmly onto the duct tape.
