Akan culture peer review

In the Akan culture, being referred to as a person is a status that one must attain due to the community norms that were set by the community, rather than having a given quality like being a human being. The premise behind the first assertion is that people are social beings with strong relationships to their immediate family. Being social requires connections to the community, and the notion of personhood is closely related to the norms, demands, and obligations established by the society. The claim that there is consciousness  has been communistically formed is supported by Shrijan. The community “becomes a part of the person’s ego and needs when one lives in a community,” he claims. There are interconnected communities that depend on one another to maintain stability.

Personhood as a social status enables a person to remain connected and act as a responsible member of the community; as someone who assists those in need and strives to improve society as a whole. I agree that it is good for people to help one another, but I disagree with this argument because I believe it promotes the idea that someone can only be referred to as a person if they give back to the community.

A person should, in my opinion, be fully responsible for taking care of themselves unless they are in a situation where they are unable to do so. I also believe that parents should take care of their children, but I disagree with the notion that they should also take care of others in order to be considered a person. What happens if the individuals they are seeking to help are not in need of anything and are simply being irresponsible?

I generally agree that if you are no longer bound by your legal commitments to others, you are no longer moral, but this should not be used to define who a person is. Regardless of what you provide to the community, you should be treated as a person as long as you are a living being. The Akan community should replace this notion. I enjoy how the work is organized since it made it easy for me to read and understand. However, after reading this, he can add more points to strengthen his argument because it’s not really convincing but overall I enjoyed reading the text and I like his points.
