Decision Practice | Student Requests | Official Requests | Parent Requests | External Requests
What do you do when students, University officials, parents/guardians, or outside parties request information from students’ education records? Let’s look at some real scenarios. Each one requires you to choose the best course of action to comply with the FERPA law and Northwestern University policy.
Objectives
As a reminder, practice will take you further toward being able to meet the following objectives:
- Protect the legal rights of Northwestern students by applying Northwestern policy for handling student education record and directory information when sharing or responding to requests for that information from various parties.
- Identify situations where FERPA applies and when it does not
- Identify when to make decisions on your own and when to seek expert advice.
