The Earthtunes team participated in education session ED11A (Amazing Technologies and Capabilities that contribute to STEAM) at #AGU21, the 2021 Hybrid Fall Meeting of the American Geophysical Union. Attendees in New Orleans and virtual attendees learned about technology to access research data via visualization and audification.
Much of the technology was loosely or firmly employed in citizen science projects, ranging from data collection to signal detection, with zooniverse.org as a major host of many such projects.
Convened by Brian Day and Kristen Ericksen from NASA and Emily Day from JPL, it was not surprising that many presentations focused on space data, such as the Earth’s magnetosphere.
The Earthtunes team especially enjoyed the presentation on audification of waves in the Earth’s magnetosphere that are generated by interaction with solar wind, including solar storms, presented by Martin Archer.
We additionally appreciated the Earth-focused modeling and virtual field trip work presented by Wilhelm Breitkreuz and Melanie Narish. Earthtunes’ Helio Tejedor presented how we conceived and developed Earthtunes as a mobile App for teachers, the general public, and researchers, to audify worldwide seismic research data from the EarthScope Consortium’s Data Management Center.
