The challenges of disrupting the status quo of producing disposable plastics from fossil fuel resources are widely understood. What is less clear is how to increase the use of renewable resources including biomass and wastes into polymer design and how to motivate system level changes through design for recycling. Our group has projects funded by the NSF Center for Sustainable Polymers and the DOE Bioenergy Technologies Office to address these challenges.
