Talkin' 'bout my Generations

Session Overview:

We often talk about various elements of diversity that highlight the ways that we are different, but we don’t talk about the impact of significant shared events experienced by generational cohorts that connect us in way that is largely independent of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, ability, or religion. These significant national events have a profound effect on how we view ourselves and the world around us, and how we are able to thrive, as well as the universal challenges we face. Understanding the defining events of each generational cohort will help counselors become aware of our own bias and offer a different perspective for understanding the development of our own values.

Learning Objectives:

1. Building awareness of the impact of significant historical events have on the world view of our clients
2. Conceptualizing the context or framework and assessment of client concerns
3. Understanding of the strengths and challenges individuals from different generations possess
4. Exploring how generational differences impact mental health counseling
