Why? The best research is the research that helps the most people, and to help the most people, we need a diverse group of volunteers to be in our study.
In order to reach our goals of recruiting and engaging a diverse group of people, we have included a few community-based components.

We have a community-advisory board (CAB).
The CAB is made up of people in the Chicago area. The CAB members give us ideas and feedback on our study, including how to be better involved in the community and recruit volunteers into the study.
We hold events in the community to educate, recruit, and of course, have fun!
In March 2021, we attended the SeniorFest, a virtual event for older adults, where we had a discussion about the meaning of research. After a year and a half in Zoom meetings, we are ready to get back in the community. We are planning a series of events for summer and fall right now, so stay tuned. If you have ideas for events or other community-engagement components, we would love to hear them. You can contact Lindy Olive at lindy.olive@northwestern.edu for community engagement concerns or idea contributions.
Have you attended a DISCO community event recently? If so, we’d love your feedback so we can improve the way we interact with communities at events. You can fill out a short feedback survey here.
