Since 1991, Dance for Life has united the Chicago dance community and its fans to support local dance community professionals affected by critical health issues. All funds raised directly benefit the Dancers’ Fund. Created by Chicago Dancer’s United in response to the impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic on the dance community, the Dancer’s Fund has broadened to include other health and living needs. The fund offers assistance in, but not limited to, the following areas: housing, utilities, insurance, medication and travel. Though it began as an annual one night performance event, Dance for Life has grown to become a year-round celebration of the strength and generous spirit of the Chicago dance community devoted to the health and wellbeing of Chicago’s dance world. During the year, performers associated with Dance for Life conduct workshops and master classes for young dancers through the Day of Dance program. As well, the Dance for Life Next Generation program, now in its 25th year, presents its own annual benefit concert featuring youth dance companies from around Chicagoland. In addition, friends of Dance for Life have the opportunity to participate in donation benefit walks and fitness classes through organizations like BeMoved.
