Even though the countries are rank-ordered from worst to least bad, the status of the pandemic is not so simple.
Those countries in red will experience exponential growth over the coming week, and their outbreak is expanding. Those countries in green still have an expanding outbreak, however, their outbreak is slowing. Those countries in purple are also in an outbreak and some have very high daily transmissions, however, their outbreak is contracting. Purple signals that while they are in an outbreak, the country is headed in the right direction. All global regions are represented in the pandemic.
The United States has remained in an outbreak for most of the pandemic and ranks first in total transmissions and deaths, even though they only represent 4% of the global population. The US ranks 43rd out of the 88 countries in an outbreak.
