James F. Oehmke, PhD

 

Faculty Profile

An economist specializing in health policy. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic he has worked on geriatric abuse in health care settings, contributing the original design to the Michigan Background Check Pilot Program that became the foundation for patient protection in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PL 111-148, aka Obamacare); the opioid epidemic; and nutrition policy. He currently holds the positions of Adjunct Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine and the Buehler Center for Health Policy and Economics at Northwestern University, Senior Policy Advisor at the U.S. Agency for International Development, and Professor Emeritus at Michigan State University. Dr. Oehmke received a B.A. in Mathematics and Economics from Yale University, and a Ph.D. and M.A. in Economics from the University of Chicago.
