Fall 2020 Room Selection

Fall 2020 Room Selection Information

Room Selection Information for New First Year and Transfer Students

General Information
  • The University is implementing a single occupancy framework (one student per room).
  • However, the Illinois Board of Higher Education guidelines issued on June 23, 2020 state that “Roommates or suitemates may be treated as a household to allow more than one occupant per room.”  Accordingly, students have the option to voluntarily live with a roommate of their choosing if that is preferred.
  • Given changes to the campus environment, new transfer, first- and second-year students may cancel their housing contracts for the entire 2020-21 academic year, with no cancellation fee if cancelled before 12:00 p.m. Central Daylight Time on August 5, 2020.
  • First- and second-year students who cancel their housing contracts prior to 12:00 p.m. Central Daylight Time on August 5, 2020 will receive credit toward the University’s two-year residency requirement.
  • All residents will be charged thedouble room ratefor the building in which they are assigned.
  • Housing is guaranteed for all students who submitted a housing contract by July 9. We currently anticipate that assignments will reach our reduced housing capacity. Students submitting housing contracts beginning July 10 will be placed on a waiting list. Additional information will be sent to these students after August 1.  (Updated 7/10/20)

Residential Services will assign you to a building and room based on the preferences you share in the housing contract.  While every effort will be made to fulfill your preferences, assignments to specific buildings or rooms cannot be guaranteed.

If you wish to live with a roommate, please ensure that you have formed a roommate group with that person/people using a roommate request form. This must be finalized by July 5. Students who wish to live near others are encouraged to submit the same housing preference rankings.

Room Selection Information for Returning Students

Returning Student Room Selection Process Overview
  • Living on campus will be different when students return, as the University is implementing a single occupancy framework (one student per room), with the option to release from your contract or have a roommate. Students will not be assigned a roommate if they do not request this option.
  • By July 5, you must complete a brief online form to indicate your intent to maintain or cancel (without penalty) your housing contract. Failure to respond may affect your room selection order or final room assignment. By July 9 (for residential college students) and by July 13 (for residence hall students), Residential Services will follow up regarding housing options for the Fall Quarter 2020 based on response to this inquiry. Due to projected space constraints, some students may not be able to select a room in the July room selection process. Please know that the University will provide housing to those students who have already signed housing contracts, even if their final room assignment is made later in the summer.
  • If you maintain your housing contract, you will still be able to cancel it (without penalty or appeal) through 12:00 p.m. Central Daylight Time on August 5, 2020. By setting this date, Residential Services is striving to provide reasonable time for planning and to offer students maximum flexibility in these uncertain times. Please abide by this deadline: Our ability to provide timely and clear information to all students seeking campus housing depends on each student providing timely and clear information to us about their fall plans. Please expect to receive in the middle of July more specific information from your school’s dean’s office outlining the school’s plans for remote and in-person teaching.
  • All residents will be charged the double room rate for the building in which they are assigned.
Returning Student Room Selection for Fall 2020
  • After the opt-in process, all Fall 2020 housing assignments for returning students will be removed from the system.
  • On July 9 (for residential college students) and on July 13 (for residence hall students), returning students will be emailed with information about next steps to participate in the new room selection process. Depending on housing demand, certain second-year, third-year, and fourth-year students might not participate in the room selection process and may be assigned later. While the University is committed to housing all students with contracts, room assignments may be delayed for some while building options are matched to demand.
  • A new room selection process will be held on July 16 and 17 for residential colleges and on July 23 and 24  (updated from July 21 and 22) for residence halls.
  • On July 23, students in residence halls who have preferred roommates or suitemates, students who will choose rooms for suite style buildings, or students who want to live in all gender housing, will select housing.
  • On July 24, students in residence halls who wish to live in single rooms, as well as students who wish to live in double rooms but do not have preferred roommates, will select rooms.
  • Particular rooms throughout campus will be offered as double rooms in an effort to maintain lower density and bathroom use ratios in buildings.
  • Students will retain the same lottery number or Residential College group number (priority order) that was used in the previous round of room selection.
