SpectrumX

SpectrumX (an NSF Spectrum Innovation Center) conducts strategic research and workforce development projects to transform spectrum management through flexible licenses, new coexistence approaches, and cloud automation and to fully enable 5G and beyond while expanding diverse commercial, scientific, and government uses of spectrum. Northwestern is a member institution. Multiple Commnet faculties participate in different Working Groups. Prof. Mike Honig is the Research Director and Project Team Lead of SpectrumX.

Next G Alliance

Next G Alliance is an initiative to advance North American wireless technology leadership. It brings together industry and research institutions. It pushes forward the idea that applied research should be leveraged to ultimately create a pathway to product realization and commercialization. Northwestern is a contributing member. Multiple Commnet faculties participate in different Working Groups.

Institute for Data, Econometrics, Algorithms, and Learning (IDEAL)

IDEAL is a transdisciplinary institute involving Northwestern, TTI Chicago, UIC, U of Chicago, and IIT, in partnership with members of the Learning Theory team at Google. The institute focuses on the theoretical foundations of machine learning, high-dimensional data analysis and inference, and data science and society. Multiple Commnet faculties are affiliated with IDEAL. Prof. Randall Berry is part of the Executive Committee.

Paula M. Trienens Institute for Sustainability and Energy

Trienens Institute is dedicated to pursuing an interdisciplinary approach to discovering sustainable solutions and educating students and the public about the world’s great challenges, such as creating sustainable cities and managing the risks of climate change. The institute’s work spans a wide range of schools across Northwestern. Multiple Commnet faculties are affiliated with the Trienens Institute.

NSF PAWR COSMOS Testbed

NSF PAWR COSMOS is an open-access wireless testbed deployed in West Harlem, NYC. The testbed includes several (outdoors and indoors) software-defined radios, programmable phased array antenna modules, optical transport network, and core and edge cloud. The testbed enables experimentation in ultra-high-bandwidth and low-latency wireless communications, sub-6GHz and mmWave, coupled edge-cloud computing, and dynamic x-haul optical networks. Commnet faculties leverage resources from COSMOS in their research.
