Hi, I’m Claire Nelson and I am a scientist studying Earth’s carbon cycle through the lens of geochemistry. My research is specifically focused on studying basalt weathering in Iceland through field-based studies.

As a PhD candidate at Northwestern University, I use specialized geochemical tools to quantify sequestration rates of atmospheric carbon dioxide through natural processes happening in Icelandic rivers. This website is designed to educate you on the following:

What is basalt weathering and what does it have to do with the carbon cycle?

Why rivers in Iceland?

How does my field and lab work help us understand the carbon cycle?
