Susan Turk Charles, Ph.D.

Susan Turk Charles, Ph.D.

Professor of Psychological Science and Nursing Science, University of California, Irvine

“My research examines emotional processes across the adult life span. I am interested in how affective experience varies across the life course, and how differences in affective experience may be related to differences in cognitive and health-related processes. I am also interested in the interplay between health and emotion, including the relationship between physical health factors (both health behavior and health status) and emotional processes, and how these relationships may vary as a function of age.”

Kuan-Hua Chen, Ph.D.

Kuan-Hua Chen, Ph.D.

Assistant Professor, Social & Affective Neuroscience, University of Nebraska Medical Center

Dr. Chen’s research examines changes in the brain and socioemotional functioning in persons with dementia, and how these changes affect health and well-being in their family/caregivers. His research also develops innovative technologies to conduct assessments and interventions in the real world and address health disparity issues. Dr. Chen’s program of research seeks to optimize brain, emotional, and social health in rural and urban aging Americans in their homes and other healthcare settings.

Joe DeGutis, Ph.D.

Research Scientist, VA Boston Healthcare System and Associate Professor, Harvard Medical School

“My research is focused on using cognitive neuroscience approaches to create better diagnostic tools and develop treatments (e.g., cognitive training and non-invasive brain stimulation) for individuals suffering from attention and face processing disorders.”

Angela Gutchess, Ph.D.

Angela Gutchess, Ph.D.

Professor of Psychology, Brandeis University

“I adopt a Cognitive and Social Neuroscience approach to the study of memory across different cultures and age groups. My research employs behavioral as well as neuroimaging (fMRI; EEG/ERP) methods and the study of patients to investigate these questions.”

Sneha Kumar, Ph.D.

Sneha Kumar, Ph.D.

Assistant Professor, Human Development and Social Policy, Northwestern University

Dr. Kumar is a social demographer who examines how disruptive family transitions and macrostructural uncertainty shape family dynamics and individual health at different stages of the life course. One strand of her research explores how migration contributes to family and health inequalities among aging individuals. Her research is focused on some of the most populous countries in the world, including Indonesia, China, and India.

Tamar Kushnir, Ph.D.

Tamar Kushnir, Ph.D.

Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience, Duke University

Dr. Kushnir’s research examines learning and conceptual change in young children with a focus on social learning and social cognition. Her work is motivated by a long-standing curiosity about the developing mind, and in particular by how children learn about themselves and others from actively exploring the world around them. Research topics include: mechanisms of causal learning, the developmental origins of our beliefs in free will and agency, cultural influences on early social and moral beliefs, normative reasoning, and epistemic trust, and the role of imagination in social cognition, motivation and decision making.

Sylvia Perry, Ph.D.

Sylvia Perry, Ph.D.

Associate Professor of Psychology, Northwestern University

“My research is situated at the intersection of social, developmental, and health psychology. I investigate how racial bias awareness develops and the implications of bias awareness for prejudice reduction, intergroup contact, and health disparities. Specifically, with my work, I seek to answer questions such as (1) To what extent do norms around admitting and discussing racism contribute to anti-racism? (2) How does White parental racial socialization shape the development of their children’s attitudes and behaviors toward Black individuals? and (3) How do educational environments shape medical trainees’ perceptions of stigmatized individuals?”

Andy Reed, Ph.D.

Andy Reed, Ph.D.

Head of Investor Behavior Research, Vanguard

Dr. Reed is head of investor behavior research in the Investment Strategy Group. He leads a global team of behavioral scientists who study how and why investors make decisions, cultivating insights and strategies to promote better choices for millions of investors. Patricia A. Reuter-Lorenz, Ph.D.

Patricia A. Reuter-Lorenz, Ph.D.

Michael I. Posner Collegiate Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience, University of Michigan

“Research in my laboratory investigates the neural and cognitive mechanisms of attention, working memory and executive control. Using a combination of behavioral and neuroimaging studies we investigate such questions as: How does aging effect attention, motor control, executive control and working memory? What strategies and training can be used to promote efficient performance? How do emotion and cognition interact?”
