What if my survey doesn’t measure perception?
That’s okay! The CHAT-E is a versatile tool that can be used to study a variety of topics. The questions in the survey don’t need to measure perception, though they must be dichotomous—either-or-style questions so that the children pick between two opposing answers.
What are the recommended ages for child participants?
The CHAT-E is designed for children who can’t yet read. The tool works best for young children between the ages of 3-8 years old.
Can I use the CHAT-E in languages other than English?
Yes! The CHAT-E is compatible with any language, and can even conduct the same survey in a variety of languages. To do so, all survey items must be translated into the target languages and voice-recorded in each target language.
What if I won’t have reliable internet access when I plan to give the assessment?
It’s possible to give the CHAT-E assessment offline. The tool has a special feature that makes it easy to record and store survey data when the device is not connected to the internet. Once the device is connected to the internet afterwards, the CHAT-E app will upload the surveys that have been stored in offline mode.
Do I have to use this app on an Android device?
Yes. Right now, the CHAT-E app is only available for download on Android tablets and phones.
What is the process for uploading my own survey questions onto the CHAT-E app?
The first step is to come up with the survey questions, child consent forms, and assessor surveys you will need for your research. The next step is to get voice recordings of the material that the children will engage with—likely your survey questions and child consent forms. Then, you will coordinate with the Synergetx programmers, who will assist by programming your survey and voice recordings into the app.
How long can my app-based interview last?
There is no official maximum length for surveys on the CHAT-E platform, however, it’s important to consider the children’s attention span and engagement. Keep in mind the target age of the children in your study and the rigor of the questions in your survey when determining adequate survey length.
