I have thoroughly enjoyed my CFS experience more than I ever thought I would. While the process of applying to positions was somewhat taxing and repetitive, I’m so glad I did because I wound up with many internship offers and ultimately chose what I think has been the most personally valuable to me. In my internship with Common Cause Illinois I have been able to take part in introducing legislation to Chicago City Council, sit in on a meeting with the Cook County Clerk, as well as meet with many community organizers and local politicians that I did not think would really be possible. This experience has really enlightened me to how local politics take shape and place and as an outgoing senior, this has been really helpful in informing my current post-graduate plans of work and study.
I was a little bit skeptical as to the role of the CFS class in my internship experience but this too has proven to be a great resource. It is really good to be able to hear from a wide-array of people doing similar but often varying jobs and to hear the sorts of experiences they’re exposed to as well as the many fields of work that exist that I am still ignorant to. My CFS instructor has crafted our course materials in a way that is specific enough to be useful but also general enough to cover a wide array of interests and experiences. All in all I have nothing bad to say about my CFS experience thus far and in many ways I wish I had taken advantage of this resource earlier into my time at Northwestern.
