Job Summary:

The Research Technologist 2 conducts experimental research lab work and/or assists in design of one or more specific phase(s) of entire project(s). May complete mathematical calculations, and/or computer tasks and/or assist in judging validity of data. Follows appropriate protocols, policies, procedures, regulations, Good Clinical and Good Laboratory Practices.

Center for Advanced Molecular Imaging (CAMI) is seeking a Preclinical Imaging Technologist who will be responsible for carrying out rodent imaging studies for various disease models (cancer, cardiovascular, neurological, etc.) and drug discovery using preclinical MRI, PET, SPECT, and CT scanners. Primary job duties include animal and radiotracer handling, basic operation of scanners and other equipment (under a senior engineer’s guidance), and routine tasks for lab upkeep. The successful candidate is expected to rigorously follow all guidelines and regulations regarding animal research and radiation safety, and be very organized, detail-orientated, and motivated to learn new skills in a small animal imaging setting.

Specific Responsibilities:
  • Research
    • Following protocols, designs, sets-up and conducts basic experiments.
    • Analyzes and troubleshoots protocols and data obtained from individual experiments and recommends alternatives and suggestions to improve processes, validity and/or accuracy.
      • Under a senior engineer’s supervision, perform basic operation of scanners and other equipment.
      • Follows pre-defined protocols, policies, procedure, regulations, Good Clinical and Good Laboratory Practices and conducts standard and repetitive experiments and completes basic trouble-shooting techniques.
      • Animal and radiotracer handling.
    • A fully functioning level of understanding in the following highlighted skills is required:
      • Animal Physiology and Anatomy:
        • Mice and Rats
      • Medical Imaging:
        • Physics/math required for image acquisition and analysis
        • Basic understanding of magnetic resonance.
      • Safety:
        • Radiation Safety
        • MRI Safety
        • Bio and chemical Hazard
  • Administration
    • Maintains detailed records of results which may include collecting, extracting & entering data.
    • Manipulates, interprets &/or presents results.
    • Prepares charts & graphs for presentations & publications.
    • Performs scientific literature searches in support of research.
  • Finance
    • Tracks & summarizes lab supply expenses.
    • Verifies accuracy of invoices.
    • Orders &/or maintains inventory of reagent, mice &/or lab supplies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • BS in engineering or physics, if no experience

OR

  • 2 years practical lab/bench experience with animal research.
Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)
  • Demonstrated laboratory experience with imaging or small animal studies.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow detailed instructions as required by research protocols.
  • Demonstrated computer skills, including spreadsheets and basic computations.
  • Attention to detail and accurate record keeping.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Manual dexterity.
Preferred Qualifications: (Education and experience)
  • Degree in biomedical engineering
  • Proven work experience in small animal experimentation.
  • Prior experience working with radioactive materials strongly preferred.
  • Good computer skills strongly preferred.
Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)
  • Experience with preclinical imaging studies.
  • Solid small animal experience and with a willingness to learn preclinical imaging.
