John Cage and Northwestern
Northwestern University’s Music Library holds the John Cage Collection, made up of correspondence, ephemera, materials related to his Notations project, and music manuscripts. Many items chosen for this exhibit came from the recently digitized John Cage Scrapbooks, viewable with campus login via Northwestern University Libraries’ Digital Collections.
In 2012, Northwestern’s Henry and Leigh Bienen School of Music commemorated Cage’s 100th birthday with a festival that included performances, a two-day symposium, and the University Libraries’ exhibit Sound & Silence: John Cage Composing Himself. A series of videos were created for the exhibit, featuring Northwestern faculty as well as other performers and composers in Cage’s orbit. As an introduction to Cage, his work, and his legacy, a compilation of these videos is reproduced here:
