In a recent class discussion, we delved into the contribution of Palestine football teams to the recognition of Palestine on the international stage. We discussed how this helps with national identity and unifies the people in a unique way. One interesting point raised by students was how it helps Lebanon with its reputation. Our discussion was based on the excerpt provided from a chapter that explored Palestinian football, focusing on the case of Lebanon, one of the largest host communities for Palestinian refugees.
The reading highlighted how Palestinian footballers’ lack of access to Lebanese citizenship has prevented them from experiencing success stories in football, unlike Palestinian immigrants and refugees in Chile and Jordan. Nevertheless, Palestinian football has served as a tool for national identity and resistance to Israel’s colonization of their homeland. Our discussion further explored how football serves as a way of expressing and representing identity, especially for those who cannot fully integrate into society.
One critique is that the politicization of football can overshadow its original purpose of promoting unity and sportsmanship. In some instances, football has been used as a tool to promote nationalist and exclusionary agendas, which can lead to further conflict and tension between communities. For example, some football matches have been marred by violence and racist behavior from fans, which can perpetuate divisions between different ethnic and religious groups.
Another critique is that football can reinforce existing power dynamics and hierarchies within society. In Lebanon, the lack of access to citizenship for Palestinians has prevented them from fully integrating into society and has limited their opportunities for success in football. This highlights the need to address structural inequalities and discrimination that prevent marginalized groups from participating fully in society.
Despite these critiques, football remains a powerful force for social change and community building. By promoting inclusivity and celebrating diversity, football can foster a sense of national pride and belonging for marginalized communities. It can also serve as a platform for activism and resistance, as seen in the Palestinian football teams that have used their platform to bring attention to the plight of their people.
