Since I was a child, I enjoyed being in and experiencing nature. My work relies heavily on the use of color theory, design, and aesthetics. I emphasize creating a plan before I start working, whether it is a sketch or an idea in my head. I work with crocheted textiles and paint to create clothing, blankets, decorative pieces, and installations. My paintings are all acrylic, consisting of recognizable botanical elements, animals, and everyday objects.

In my current project, ‘Bloom’, I drew from my experience during the cherry blossom season in Maryland last March. Prior to this, I had never seen cherry blossoms in person. ‘Bloom’ comprises locally found branches with my hand-crafted two-toned flowers. The soft tones contrasted with the overwhelming number of flowers were breathtaking. I crocheted off-white and pale pink flowers combined with thin branches to create an ever-lasting surreal feeling within this installation. Each individual flower is hand-tied onto the branch and positioned to resemble a natural cherry blossom. These branches are hung on the walls and in corners in a gallery space, with others suspended from the ceiling. This creates an effect that allows the viewer to feel immersed in the work as if they were in nature. I often create art that reminds me of enjoyable moments or objects I have encountered and experienced. This tends to involve various botanic elements, color palettes, or animals. I focus on creating realistic objects because I value the recognition that my art holds. This does limit the style of art that I create, however, I find the most meaning and motivation by working this way.

Art, for me, is an expressive way to create work that I enjoy and that others can experience my joy through. When I am passionate about a topic, I radiate that feeling, and my craft allows me to center that into tangible objects.
