Projects

HoverCat (Student Design Competition)

For the 2023 Innovative Additive Manufacturing 3D Challenge, a group of ASME members designed and built a 3D-printed hovercraft. The competition tasked university students to use additive manufacturing (3D printing) and an iterative design process to build a hovercraft capable of navigating a course, securing a package, and delivering it. Students learned valuable skills such as CAD, 3D printing, electronics, and more. The team’s dedication and ingenuity paid off as they proudly represented Northwestern ASME in Milwaukee, where they competed against fellow schools from across the region.

H2Go (Student Design Competition)

For the 2022 ASME Student Design Competition, students created a water-propelled vehicle that transported as much water as possible to the other side of a playing field. Students designed and built the vehicle from scratch, gaining hands-on experience with tools such as laser cutting and 3D printing.

Aeolus Hovercraft (IAM3D Challenge)

For the 2019 ASME IAM3D Challenge, students created a resupply hovercraft vehicle utilizing as many 3D printed parts as possible. Through this project students learned skills like CAD, 3D printing, and mechatronics!
