Anna E. McKean

I am a PhD Candidate in Management & Organizations and Sociology at Northwestern University. My research focuses on the interactions between corporations, the state, and stakeholders, and the underlying power dynamics within these interactions. Drawing from my background in management and sociology, I use both political sociology and stakeholder theory to inform this work. Through my research, I seek to understand how, when, and why firms use different types of nonmarket strategies. Additionally, my work takes into account factors such as political polarization; values and ideology; differences among companies; the influence of social media; perceived “peer pressure” or cultural expectations; and so on.

My dissertation research focuses in particular on the evolution of corporate sociopolitical involvement. The first chapter examines the overall emergence and growth of this area of nonmarket strategy, exploring the variance in its manifestations and how they differ from other forms of nonmarket strategy. The second two chapters focus on specific instances of corporate activism to understand (1) how firms convey sincerity in their sociopolitical actions, and (2) the influence of such actions on a firm’s internal stakeholders.

By examining action taken by corporations around polarizing political issues, I hope to contribute to this growing area of research by illuminating insights on the overlap between corporate political action (CPA) and corporate social responsibility (CSR). Nonmarket strategy is expanding and changing in both research and practice, and my research explores the antecedents, processes, and impact of those changes. My dissertation committee is comprised of Anthony Chen, Brayden King (chair), Bruce Carruthers, Jillian Chown, and Mary-Hunter McDonnell.

My research interests include organizational theory, nonmarket strategy, corporate sociopolitical involvement, corporate social responsibility, corporate political activity, and social movements.

I currently live with my husband in Brisbane, Australia, while I finish my dissertation. Beyond academia, I fill my time with baking and hiking. I have a passion for travel, food, and all things outdoors.
