Message from President Schapiro

Congratulation Fellowship Winners!

I am thrilled to have the opportunity to salute the 247 students and alumni whose awards have come to our attention since our last celebration in May 2019.

This group has secured 100 different awards to support an amazing array of opportunities – from undergraduate study abroad to postdoctoral interdisciplinary STEM research. That’s a remarkable 40% increase over last year.

Our awardees will be on the move, across the nation and around the globe, from Alabama to Algeria. Of course, this year’s awardees have been operating in a difficult context that no one could have imagined — a global pandemic that has upended all of our lives. Some have seen their programs delayed, and others have seen them cancelled.  In a number of cases, programs were cancelled even before awardees were named, while some of our nominees continue to await the news about whether they will receive their grants and awards.

In the midst of all this disruption, I’m incredibly proud of our applicants and awardees.  You pushed forward regardless of the obstacles you faced. I am grateful to all of the NU mentors who supported our students as they developed their ideas, and as they confronted the challenges brought about by the pandemic.

Students, alumni and mentors – you represent the depth and breadth of Northwestern’s excellence. Thank you, congratulations, and go cats.
