What is your favorite ECON memory?
My favorite economics memory occurred in Professor Chabot’s class about economic history. We were assigned empirical homework that illustrated how bank panics and deflation during the Great Depression affected the level of economic activity. We were given data that led us to reach the same conclusions as Nobel Prize winning economists and demonstrate why a lack of liquid collateral made the Great Depression so much worse.

What is your favorite Northwestern memory?
My favorite Northwestern memory was the Northwestern vs. Michigan basketball game in 2017. Having grown up in Ann Arbor, this game marked the first time I was cheering for a team other than the Wolverines. It was surreal watching Nathan Taphorn heave a pass across the court and watching Dererk Pardon make the basket. It was equally surreal storming the court with my friends after the game!

What is your favorite ECON memory?
In my sophomore year Econ 310-1 class, Prof. Shultz had the entire lecture sing “Sixteen Tons” out loud towards the end of the quarter. It was a creative and fun way to discuss applications of the subject matter in popular culture, while letting your guard down in class. This example is reflective of Prof. Shultz’s teaching style, one that was unique, enjoyable, and memorable in my college career.

What is your favorite Northwestern memory?
Though it isn’t academics related, I will never forget attending the 2017 Northwestern Mens Basketball game against Michigan, where Derek Pardon tipped in the game winner at the buzzer, and the entire student section stormed the court to celebrate an inevitable berth to our first NCAA tournament.

What is your favorite ECON memory?
Winter quarter junior year, I took a class with Professor Udry called “Economic Development in Africa.” This course had us complete a series of mini-data projects over the quarter where we analyzed, and then presented takeaways on, economic information from various countries in Africa. During one of my presentations, there was a moment when I realized, for the first time, how my Economics major has enabled me to be able to provide insights that can result in tangible improvements to the world around me. I think that the big-picture application of economic theories to real life can often be difficult to understand, but this class really opened my eyes to the power of economics and its ability to make a difference- a feeling that was incredibly empowering.

What is your favorite Northwestern memory?
Being holed up in Tech during finals week, commiserating with friends over bubble tea and practice problems. Then, getting the brilliant idea to start a spontaneous karaoke session using the projector in Lecture Room 3, YouTube, and a prodigious amount of singing talent. A great night where U[X] = over 1000 was then topped off at Fran’s with the greatest shakes anyone could ask for.
