What is the purpose of this study?
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of different treatment strategies for people who have both obstructive sleep apnea and insomnia. These treatment strategies include using a medical device known as CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) or using this device with a behavioral treatment to improve sleep. We are interested in testing different combinations and sequences using these approaches to see if we can improve patient care for people who suffer from both sleep apnea and insomnia.
What will you be asked to do?
If you choose to participate in this study, you will begin with a screening to determine if you are able to participate in the study. This will include a short phone call, a face-to-face interview and a overnight sleep evaluation. If you do qualify for the study, you will be randomly assigned to one of three conditions. What condition you receive is determined by chance and neither the investigator nor you can request or pre-specify which condition you can receive.
In the first condition, you will begin with a behavioral treatment that consists of 4 individual weekly sessions (about 50 minutes each) that focuses on changing your sleep-related behaviors.
Then, you will return for an overnight sleep assessment where you will be wearing a mask and using a machine to improve your breathing at night. A medical company will then come to your house to set up this medical device and you will be asked to use it at home. You will then return to our lab for assessment visits 30 days after using the machine, 90 days after using the machine, and again at 180 days after using the machine. Each of these assessment visits is expected to last between 30 and 60 minutes.
In the second condition, you will begin by completing sleep diaries to monitor your symptoms for four
weeks in a row. You will then return for an overnight sleep assessment where you will be wearing a mask and using a machine to improve your breathing at night. A medical company will then come to your house to set up this medical device and you will be asked to use this at home. At this time, you will also begin with a behavioral treatment that consists of 4 individual weekly sessions (about 50 minutes each) that focuses on changing your sleep-related behaviors. After completing these 4 sessions, you will then return to our lab for an assessment visit (about 30-45 minutes). You will also be asked to return for a visit 90 days after using the machine and a final visit at 180 days after using
the machine (each visit lasts about 45-60 minutes).
In the third condition, you will begin by completing sleep diaries to monitor your symptoms for 4 consecutive weeks. You will then return for an overnight sleep assessment where you will be wearing a mask and using a machine to improve your breathing at night. A medical company will then come to your house to set up this medical device and you will be asked to use this at home. You will then return to our lab for assessment visits 30 days after using the machine (about 30-45 minutes), again at 90 days and 180 days after using the machine (about 45-60 minutes for each visit).
What are the costs of your participation in this study?
There is no cost to participate in this study.
Will you be compensated or paid?
You will be paid $20 for completing each of the five study assessments for a total of $100. We will also provide compensation up to $10 for parking or transportation costs related to attending the study visits.
