Welcome to the Electronics and Laser Systems Core Facility

The Electronics and Laser Systems Core (ELSC) provides instrumentation and electronics fabrication/support to the Department of Chemistry and the greater Northwestern University community.  The ELSC exists to educate students, postdocs, and faculty on the most effective way to design and fabricate electronics equipment needed for signal generation, data collection, and scientific instrument control.  In cases where equipment or components can be commercially purchased or existing designs reused, this path is always preferable to redesign and in house fabrication.  This policy allows electronics shop staff to perform consulting, design, and fabrication services for instruments not otherwise available at the most reasonable rates while focusing on enabling the creation of new capabilities for the students, postdocs and faculty.

The ELSC’s functions include but are not limited to:

  • High level electronics design/engineering
  • Instrument integration and automation (e.g., Labview Programming)
  • Optical system development
  • Electronics and optics troubleshooting
  • Instrument repair and maintenance
  • Consultation on new instrument purchases
