Mythic Ceiling Murals

Chicago_Theater_-_day-1Extraordinary mythical scenes are all over the ceiling of the Chicago Theater auditorium at 175 N State Street in the Loop, originally built as a movie palace. WTTW Chicago Tonight talked with Wendy Greenhouse about the artistry of the Chicago muralist Louis Grell. Greenhouse stresses that early movie palaces often employed classically-inflected atmospheres to convey the lasting importance and cultural significance of cinema. Here’s a sample:
